Life With A Newborn Might Not Be All Sunshine and Daisies

Life With A Newborn Might Not Be All Sunshine and Daisies
This post is going to be very different from my regular posts. For a start, it’s going to be shorter. For another, it’s not really going to be about a podcast.

Many of you know that I am now in the process of certifying as a Postpartum Doula. It’s got me thinking about the postpartum period, the fourth trimester as it’s sometimes called, and about my own experience of that time.

Recently, there was a post in a group I belong to from someone open enough to admit that she was feeling overwhelmed by postpartum life. A baby, older children, a husband, housework, guests…. It was too much to handle everything and so she reached out.

Essential Oils in Pregnancy, Birth & The Postpartum

The Pregnancy Podcast – Essential Oils for Pregnancy, Birth and Postpartum (And Their Safety)

Why this podcast?
I don’t think it’s a secret at this point that this is one of my go-to podcasts. It’s fun, informative, evidenced-based and with episodes of thirty minutes or less covering pretty much anything you can think of relating to pregnancy, birth and the early postpartum, this is definitely not the last time you’ll see it featured.

How does it look?
Unless this is your first visit to this blog you will have probably read about the Pregnancy Podcast multiple times. In case you haven’t, here is a short, and I mean super short breakdown.

Your Fourth Trimester: Five Universal Truths

The Expectful Podcast – The Five Universal Truths Of Your Fourth Trimester

 Why this podcast?
This one is a fairly recent discovery for me but I really like it. I featured the episode How To Love Your Birth  – However It Looks back in January and, whilst listening to episodes in the meantime, I found one in particular that I really wanted to share.

As well as airing a fantastic podcast, Expectful also offers guided meditations for fertility, pregnancy and motherhood. Whilst listening to various pregnancy and birth podcasts I have heard women refer again and again to these meditations so there must be something to them!

What If YOU Were In Charge Of Pregnancy & Birth?

Birth, Baby & Life – What If YOU Were In Charge Of Pregnancy & Birth?

Why this podcast?
The Birth, Baby & Life podcast has only featured once on this blog but with one hundred episodes to date, I felt it was time for another!

The host, Kristen Burgess, is an advocate of natural birth but says that blind faith in birth is not enough. She stresses the importance of working with your unique body and your unique pregnancy and baby to prepare for the birth you want.

Kristen has eight children and so definitely knows a thing or two about birth. She developed Natural Birth and Baby Care in the hope of providing –

Doulas

PregTASTIC – Prenatal Doula

Why this podcast?
I recently completed all the requirements for my Birth Doula certification and was feeling inspired to write a post on doulas. I happened to stumble upon the PregTASTIC podcast and decided it would be a good time to feature them again.

Then I realised that I hadn’t featured them at all.

Not once!

So, not only did I find an episode on doulas but I get to feature a whole new podcast too.

PregTASTIC describes itself as –

“A weekly online radio show by pregnant women, for pregnant women about the fantastic journeys to motherhood”

The Low Down On Interventions

The Pregnancy Podcast – Interventions

Why this podcast?
The Pregnancy Podcast was a huge part of my inspiration for creating this blog.
I loved how I could get evidence-based, well-researched information given in a super relaxed, easy to listen to style in episodes of thirty minutes or less.

Is there much more to say?

How does it look?
There are actually three different styles of episodes.
Forty weeks gives you information about what’s happening with you and your baby in each week of your pregnancy. These episodes are five minutes.

Breastfeeding Tips

Babies and Moms: Birth and Beyond – Breastfeeding Tips

Why this podcast?
Another new podcast this week! Well, it’s clearly not new because Babies and Moms: Birth and Beyond started broadcasting in March 2007 and aired the last episode in November 2013.

But, it’s new to me and that means it’s also new to this blog.

This podcast reminds me a little of Pea in the Podcast in that it is a small group of women, in this case, three, at ease and chatting with each other. Each of the hosts is a mother with very different experiences and I think many women will find someone or something they can connect with.

It Takes A Village

The Pregnancy, Birth and Beyond Show – Call in the Village

Why this podcast?
I wanted to feature a podcast that I hadn’t listened to or written about in a while and I decided on this one. The other post featuring this podcast was about postpartum depression and is definitely worth a read.

I love the fact that The Pregnancy, Birth and Beyond Show comes from Australia as the vast majority of the podcasts I have discovered so far have been American. By the way, if you have recommendations for more international birth podcasts, I’d love to hear from you.

Breastfeeding Your Newborn

All Things Breastfeeding – Breastfeeding Your Newborn Baby

Why this podcast?
It’s World Breastfeeding Week – how could I not feature a breastfeeding podcast?

The podcast is actually part of a website called The Breastfeeding Center of Ann Arbor which is a fantastic breastfeeding resource whether you are looking for tips on feeding, looking to take a lactation training or wondering how you are going to manage to breastfeed once you are back at work. There are even links to blogs, youtube videos, apps and lots more. It really is a very comprehensive resource for, well, all things breastfeeding.

So, What About AFTER You Have The Baby?

The Postpartum Podcast – The Power of Podcast and Social Media and New Motherhood

Why this podcast?
The Postpartum Podcast is one I’ve subscribed to for a while but haven’t written about yet.

I think that’s simply because, being a birth doula, I tend to focus on pregnancy and birth but the postpartum period, especially the immediate postpartum, is really a part of birth too.

Many of you will have heard of the 4th Trimester Bodies Project. This project is dedicated to –
